    Chinchilla Sounds

Chinchillas have a wide range of sounds they make to communicate with other chinchillas, animals and humans. Though much of the time chinchillas are quiet, there are many sounds that they make to convey different feelings. The sounds they make range from high pitch squeaks, to a gentle purring sound. You will be most likely to hear these noises in the twilight hours when your chinchilla is most active. Below are some explanations of common chinchilla sounds and there interpreted meaning.

    Contact Call

This is one of the most common sounds you will hear your chinchilla make. This sounds seems to say "hey anyone out there." It is a soft ongoing series of grunts or throaty sounds that seem to be a chinchilla's way of asking if you are in the room, or asking another chinchilla to give it some attention.

    Alarm Call

The alarm call is a call used by chinchillas in the wild to alert the herd of predators or danger. I have heard this sound used when there was a cat next to my chinchilla's cage and they were feeling threatened. The alarm call can be a series of loud cries, or a loud short burst, but it will be pretty clear that something is upsetting your chinchilla and you should probably check it out.

    Pain and Fear

A very loud shrill squeak is a chinchilla's typical response to pain and sometimes sudden fear. If your chinchilla is injured or roughly grasped this is likely the sound you will hear. This should be a rare sound to hear from a chinchilla and never a pleasant one.

    Warning Clicks

Teeth chattering is the way a chinchilla will warn humans and other chinchillas to back off! It is a series of clicks that will typically be matched with the chinchilla trying to hide itself, back away or flee.

    Aggressive Grunt

A chinchilla will grunt when it isn't thrilled with something going on. Some chinchillas will make this grunting sound when you try to pick them up, or when another chinchilla tries to snatch something from their hands. It has been our experience that this sound is more annoyance than a chinchilla being very upset. If teeth chattering starts, that is the best sign to leave your chinchilla alone.

There are a variety of other sounds that chinchillas make including very cute baby chinchilla sounds that tend to be higer pitch squeaks, unique mating sounds and soft cooing sounds when they are being affectionate. http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/index_en.htm is a great site to hear the sounds described above. Cheeky Chinchillas also offers a variety of sound clips http://www.cheekychinchillas.com/chinsounds.html

    Comments

My baby chinchilla Ghost keeps escaping out of her cage. Whenever I catch her and put her back she makes the cutest sounds. Baby chinchillas seem to "talk" a lot more than adult chinchillas and use a variety of high pitch squeaks to let mom know they are hungry!

Hi, I have a chinchilla who's about 2 years old. Every once in a while, he will make sounds like a squeaky toy that are loud and disturbing. Nobody tries to hurt him or anything. Why does he make these sounds?

When I take my chinchilla out to play I normally sit on the floor and just read or study so I dont bother him because I have only had him for a month so he is still a little timid around me. He sometimes sits and stares at me then starts making the sound in the video. Am I bothering him by sitting on the floor?

Hey everybody. The sound your hearing is a warning/I'm scared sound. Thats normal sound for chin's to make. For Chistine post your chin might be scared of you. Just give it time and give he/she treats once a day be easy with chin and the scaryness will go away. For the warning part. I have six chins! If they hear something far away if the feel threaten by it The sound might set them off EX. A plane was flying over my house one day I was in the room at the time They heard it before i did, one chin fealt threaten by it and he made that loud barking sound. Also it warns the old chins danger lurking around. Hope this helps!!

I was reading this, and I noticed that it said how teeth chattering warns other chinchillas or humans. That is true, but it is also a sign of how they're scared, or in other cases, very happy.
I hear this sound sometimes when I'm holding my chinchilla. And whenever I kiss her, she tries kissing me on the cheek or lips, even though she accidentally nips me.
Sorry, just thought I should add that in there for people who didn't know this, or new comers to this site.
    Thanks.
P.S: I love this site! I visit every once in a while to see if there's anything new, or just to help me out with making the bond with my chinchilla a little bit stronger.

my chinchilla never makes sounds should i worry? She is the most friendliest, she rolls and in her ball loves to plays with our other animals and loves to run and hop on the wheel in her cage
Posted @ Sunday, September 04, 2011 11:40 AM by Zora Torres
    Dear Zora Torres,

When I first got my chinchilla she would make the contact sound in the middle of the night, so I would always tell her that I'm here and she's fine.
But there have been times where I had to go to her cage and hold her, because she wouldn't stop making the sound.

Also, I suggest you don't put her in the plastic ball anymore as they can get heat stroke and it is bad for their spinal cord; no matter how well ventilated or spacious it may seem.
And you shouldn't have her around other animals, as a chinchilla can be severely damaged psychologically.
There are also possible health problems to consider.
Chinchillas are born with very different temperaments. A calm, less easily frightened chinchilla will make a better pet than a frantic, jumpy animal.
